DIGITAL PRINTING: A 4-color (also called full color) process that prints directly on a garment using a computer file.
EMBROIDERY: A decorating technique that programs a specially designed machine to accurately and intricately stitch a design or multiple designs, accounting for texture, pattern and color.
LASER APPLIQUE: A decorating technique that uses a laser beam to cut single or multiple layers, revealing a fine, detailed design. Reverse appliqué, made popular by Abercrombie &Fitch and Hollister, is a commonly used type of laser appliqué.
LASER ETCHING: A decorating technique that uses laser technology to etch of burn a mark on a fabric surface to reveal a unique design.
DENSITY: Number of stitches per given area.
DIGITIZING: Conversion of the artwork in a series of stitch commands that are read by an decorating machine.
RESIZING: The ability to scale a design to different sizes to accommodate a variety of looks and garments. Extreme resizing can lead to density issues.
LETTERING: Embroidery, using letters or words. Lettering, often called keyboard lettering, can be created using embroidery software to provide a variety of sizes, styles and densities.
Terms About Stitching
CONNECTING STITCHES: Threads that connect short distanced objects in embroidery. A distance of 1/16" is the industry standard for using a connecting stitch.
FILL STITCH: A series of running stitches commonly used to cover large areas.
RUNNING STITCH: A single stitch between two points used for outlining and creating fine details.
SATIN STITCH: Formed by closely arranged zigzag stitches. Can be stitched at any angle and at varying lengths.
Terms About the Process
HOOP: Wood, plastic or steel device used to tightly grip and the stabilizer between and inner and outer ring and securely attach it to the bed of an embroidery machine.
FINISHING: Processes done after the decoration is complete, including trimming loose threads, removing excess fabric and backing, and pressing or steaming the garment to remove puckers or hoop marks.
PUCKERING: Result of a fabric being gathered by stitches. Possible causes include loose hooping, lack of or improper backing, incorrect tension or a dull needle.
TRIMMING: Step in the finishing process that involves clipping the reverse and top sides of the embroidery. This includes the backing and any jump stitches.
BACKING: Material used beneath the fabric to provide stability and support during the decorating process.
